The Art of Attachment

Daniel Caesar’s single ‘Hold Me Down’ embodies the lengths individuals put towards romanticizing relationships to help them feel fully understood,  disregarding any toxicities they may face along the way. As we gear into the realities of the next phases of our lives, we’re often overwhelmed within our environments and inevitably experience societal pressures constantly. Within this constant loop of entering and exiting phases of our lives, one thing remains the same, our longing of feeling loved. Daniel Caesar expresses the necessity humans put towards being loved over anything else, by stating:

If you love me, baby, let me hear you say it

I know I’m your favorite

First you love me then you leave me in the basement

I know I’m your favorite

If you love me, baby, let me hear you say it

I know I’m your favorite

First you love me then you leave me on the pavement

I know I’m your favorite

These lyrics embody  the art of attachment, how love, in its truest form can be blinding. In the perspective of someone deeply attached to their partner, their flaws and toxicities all blend into perfection in their eyes. Why do we keep coming back to those who hurt us? Why do we take advantage of the deep connections we have with someone? The answers are quite simple, it’s basic human nature, we will always seek validation and the longing for feeling loved and understood.
